About Me

...

Where do I begin? I'm a Sydney-based IT Engineer with a deep passion for fixing and building anything tech related.

I do love to bring my people skills into the IT space, my experience within the online retail and Managed Services space has given me a broad range of exposure to all the fun things that go wrong in tech, so coupled with my people skills and technical ability, I thrive!

I'd say my favourite ability is picking up any skill quickly and troubleshooting. Oh and common sense ahah.

These days, most of my free time goes into my home lab, where I experiment and tinker with virtualisation, monitoring/observability, network design, and automation (as seen in my topology above).

Current Projects

...

I just created my own local AI inference server using Ollama & Open WebUI on Rocky Linux 9 - hosted on bare-metal. I decided not to complicate things by using a hypervisor or K3s, I just kept it simple before I upgrade to a Mac Mini for power efficiency reasons, and bigger models.

Front End: ai.shamya.net
Inference: Llama 3.1 8B + Qwen2.5-Coder 7B
Security: Cloudflare Zero Trust OTP, SELinux, SSH-key only, no exposed ports
Stack: Rocky Linux 9 Minimal, Nvidia GTX 1070 (old as), Ollama, Docker, Cloudflare Tunnel

Skills

...

Here are my key skills that I've learnt through many years of Ops work and tinkering at home:

Operations and Service Management

• Windows patching and endpoint work using Ivanti and Tanium across multiple client environments
• ServiceNow incident and request handling, prioritisation, escalation, and working to SLAs
• Daily health checks, triage, and remediation across a mix of client systems
• Active Directory user and access tasks, including repeatable changes via PowerShell
• Change planning, scheduling, and documentation, including runbooks and KB updates
• CVE remediation through change requests and controlled rollout

Platform and Homelab Engineering

• Proxmox virtualisation across multiple nodes, building and iterating on a home lab platform
• pfSense as a virtual router, plus OpenVPN for secure remote access back into the home network
• Pi-hole for DNS and ad-blocking, plus UniFi network setup (controller, switch, U6 Lite AP)
• Docker, Portainer, NGINX, Ollama, and Open WebUI for self-hosting applications and AI services
• Bare-metal Rocky Linux AI inference server using NVIDIA GPU acceleration (GTX 1070)
• Windows Server VM workloads, including MSSQL Express for lab apps and testing
• Cloudflare Tunnel and Zero Trust for securely publishing selected services

Automation, IaC, and Tooling

• Terraform provisioning Proxmox VMs via API, using cloud-init for repeatable builds
• Ansible bootstrapping K3s and base utilities on new nodes
• Argo CD syncing manifests to deploy and manage cluster apps
• Self-hosted GitHub Actions runner for CI style workflows and automated deployments
• Git and GitHub for version control and change tracking
• PowerShell, Bash, and Python for automation, scripting, and AI infrastructure management

Observability and Monitoring

• Prometheus and Grafana dashboards for hosts, services, and cluster monitoring
• kube-prometheus-stack in K3s, plus Alertmanager for alert handling
• Exporter rollout including node exporter, Windows exporter, Proxmox exporter, SQL exporter, and blackbox checks
• Loki for logs, Tempo for tracing, and OpenTelemetry collector for telemetry plumbing
• Cloudflare Zero Trust, SELinux, and SSH key-only authentication for service hardening
• Status monitoring via Better Stack for public facing uptime

Current Work Experience: MS Engineer - Operations Centre | NTT Ltd (Sydney) | Jan 2023 - Present

...

Most senior in the Operations Support Team at NTT Australia. My day to day covers incident and request queues, patching and post change validation, user provisioning, and operational health checks. I'm also the first escalation point and I train new team members on how to perform their daily work tasks.

• Monthly security patching for Windows Server 2012-2022 using Tanium, Ivanti and SCCM (plus manual catalogue updates), including pre-checks, change control, rollback planning and post-change verification
• Post change verification testing for telephony and call recording platforms using predefined validation steps, logging issues for CABs
• ServiceNow incident and request handling, prioritisation, escalation, and updates within SLAs
• End to end user provisioning: AD and mailbox creation, RBAC access, telephony resourcing, CRM access, and licensing
• Hybrid Exchange admin tasks: creating and updating shared mailboxes and rooms, plus user lifecycle changes
• Point lead for onboarding, process improvements, and maintaining KB articles and runbooks

Previous Work Experience: Monitoring Engineer | NTT Ltd (Sydney) | Jun 2021 - Jan 2023

...

Monitoring Engineer at NTT Australia, focused on keeping systems stable through monitoring, repeatable health checks, and clean escalation. I kept shift work consistent by maintaining runbooks and KBs, and I wrote small scripts to speed up user creation/edits when tickets came in.

• Operational health checks across core services, including hypervisor checks, antivirus checks, storage health, CCTV checks, and patch compliance
• Alert response and baseline checks, plus routine operational validation and follow-ups
• Monitoring and system health checks across Windows environments, including Hybrid Exchange where required
• Maintained ServiceNow KBs and runbooks with dependencies, risks and rollback steps so shift work stayed repeatable
• Built small PowerShell scripts for automated user creation and log capture to reduce manual triage time
• Supported incident and request queues as required, including clean escalation and stakeholder updates
• Blackbox monitoring upkeep, including adding and removing monitored services and devices

Prior Work Experience: Logistics & Online Team Leader | Myer Chatswood 2016 - 2021

...

Worked for Myer Chatswood's Online Fulfilment team for over 5 years and through a wide range of technical changes. I was able to manage a team of around 30 team members at a time as a shift team leader, through Black Friday sales and Boxing day orders. I managed all the Warehouse Management Sytems for order picking while delegating roles for the staff on shift. Myer was a memorable place, where I made a lot of valuable connections and gained wholly beneficial skills for life.

• Online fulfilment and services
• Pick & Pack skills
• WMS systems, logistics management
• Team Leading
• Analytical skills
• Fast paced environment management
• More than 5 years log

CONTACT

...

I'd really love to hear from you so why not send me an email at contact@shamya.net & i'll get back to you as soon as I can.

I'm just expermenting below with some embedded Grafana metric panels, I first need to setup a holistic dashboard, with proper labels etc. Don't worry about it being exposed, it's reversed proxied and the user is anonymous with no editing ability. Everything is a test environment as well.
